Installing custom fonts on Kindle and Kobo ebook readers

This is something I didn’t know was possible: you can install custom fonts onto your Kindle and Kobo e-readers.

It’s incredibly straightforward for both – you plug in your ereader into your computer and drag the .otf (OpenType) or .ttf (TrueType) font files onto your mounted device into the “font” folder.

Here’s specific instructions for Kindle and Kobo. For my Kindle Scribe and Mac, I needed to install Android File Transfer. More details from Amazon here.

I’ve installed two fonts: Libre Baskerville (as suggested in the article above) and Apple’s New York font, which is my favorite reading font on iPad. For New York, I needed to increase the bold setting twice on my Kindle to have on it to look decent on e ink (there's also some tweaking needed on Kobo, too), but it’s great!

I had preferred Caecilla Condensed previously, which is a good font, but having the option to add mire, including my personal favorite, feels like I am one step closer to holding my dream e-reader.
